TASTING WITH WILLIE No.2

The purpose of this tasting was to help the majority of people who go to a supermarket and have absolutely no clue what to buy.

The second tasting centres around wines that are £10.00 or under. I selected two wines from three Supermarkets, Sainsburys,Tesco and Waitrose. As before, I bought the wines myself.

The purpose of this tasting was to help the majority of people who go to a supermarket and have absolutely no clue what to buy. There is SO MUCH CHOICE! So I looked through the offerings at around £10 and made what I considered to be an informed choice!

Whilst I’m not a great fan of marking systems, I accept that you need something to compare each wine with its peer group. So, I have marked each wine out of a possible 20!

If a really cheap wine gets 15 points, it’s pretty damn good!

THE WHITES

SAINSBURYS TASTE THE DIFFERENCE PETIT CHABLIS 2019 £10.50 17.5 points

Fabulous citrus aromas, fresh, no oak so very pure! Lovely zippy flavour with crisp apples and citrus note. This will appeal to those who like a lighter style but with plenty of crispness.

WAITROSE No 1 CEDERBERG CHENIN BLANC 2020 £9.99 17.5 points

If you find sauvignon Blanc too aggressive and Chardonnay to acidic, try this lovely round appley, medium bodied wine. It’s got great balance of soft fruit with granny smith freshness. A great all rounder.

TESCO FINEST MARLBOROUGH CHARDONNAY 2018 £9.00 18.5 points

If you like your chardonnay with a touch of oak, but nicely balanced by zippy acidity, this has your name on it! My favourite of the three whites. There’s enough here to match it with some creamy or spicy food, but it’s a great drink on its own. NZ Chasrdonnays tend to be the most elegant chardonnays from the Southern Hemisphere. Great value!!

THE REDS

SAINSBURYS TASTE THE DIFFERENCE CHILEAN PINOT NOIR £7.00 17 points

Smells of sweet braised strawberries with a hint of herbs. This has a lovely sweet plumpred fruit character, with plenty of richness to tackle spicy food and barbequed meat. Brilliant value, even if it doesn’t reach the subtle notes I look for in top Pinot Noir. Great value!!

TESCO FINEST MARLBOROUGH PINOT NOIR 2019 £9.00 18 points

If I had to choose one New World Country to put my trust in it would be New Zealand. This Pinot Noir is excellent and a steal  £9! This really smells like souped up Red Burgundy, lovely toasty fresh strawberry aromas, intense fraise de bois flavours, yet nicely set off by hints of leaf and acidity. Best of the reds!!

WAITROSE No 1 CHILEAN CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2017 £9.99 17.5 points

Here’s a punchy full bodied blackcurrant fruit bomb with a nice kick of vanilla oak. A rich, smooth red that will make a great partner to slow cooked red meat stews and the like.  Whilst the alcohol is on the high side, the tannins and spicey oak give this Bordeaux impostor nice balance.

CONCLUSION

If you can buy any of the wines above on promotion I would go for it! £10 is definitely the current Supermarket Dinner Party sweetspot.
